  • This study was conducted to provide information on alien species to the specific islands monitored by Ministry of Environment in South Korea, based on the National Survey of Natural Environment of Islands from 2006 to 2020. In the study area, a total 54 taxa, consisting of 17 family, 45 genera, 53 species, one variety, were found. Among them, two species classified as Ecosystem-disturbing species, Humulus japonicus (H. japonicus) Siebold & Zucc. and Ambrosia artemisiifolia (A. artemisiifolia) Linnaeus were found. Alien plants were identified on 127 islands (49.4%), H. japonicus were found on 27 and A. artemisiifolia on six specific islands. The spatial status of alien flora on the specific islands monitored by Ministry of Environment in our data can be basic ecological information for the conservation and management of plant species diversity on the islands.

우리나라는 3면이 바다로 둘러싸인 국가로 특히, 서남해안의 해안선은 복잡한 리아스식 해안으로 총 3,382개(유인도서 464개와 무인도서 2,918개)에 독특한 자연생태계를 이루고 있는 도서가 분포하고 있다(Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, 2020). 사람이 거주하지 아니하거나 극히 제한된 지역에서만 거주하는 무인도서 중에 자연 경관 및 자연 생태계 등이 우수한 섬을 대상으로 환경부장관이 지정하여 고시하는 섬을 특정도서로 관리하고 있으며(Ministry of Environment, 2014b), 특정도서는 전국 무인도서 2,918개 중에 257개 도서가 지정 및 관리되고 있다(Ministry of Environment, 2022).
침입외래종은 토지 및 해양 이용의 변화, 생물종의 직접적인 착취, 기후 변화 및 오염과 함께 생물다양성 손실의 가장 중요한 5대 요인 중에 하나이다(IPBES, 2023). 자연생태계에 유입, 정착, 확산되어 유전자원의 변화, 생태계 시스템 교란, 자생종의 종 다양성 감소 등 자연생태계에 많은 부작용을 초래하고 있다(Cho et al., 2021). 뉴질랜드 식물의 거의 절반이 외래식물로 구성되는 등 현재 전체 섬의 25% 이상에서 외래식물의 수가 토종식물의 수를 초과하고 있어 섬에서 가장 큰 피해를 주고 있다(IPBES, 2023). 국내에 침입한 외래생물은 2020년 2,653종으로 2014년 2,167종 대비 약 22% 증가하였으며(Ministry of Environment, 2014a; National Institute of Ecology, 2021), 매년 지속적으로 증가하고 있다. 국제적인 중요성이 부각되고 있는 섬지역의 생물다양성 보존을 위한 침입외래종 관리가 필요하며, 이를 위해서는 가장 먼저 외래식물 서식 실태 현황 파악이 필요하며, 이러한 정보를 통해 퇴치사업 대상지 선정, 시행, 사후 모니터링 등 단계적이고 체계적으로 진행되어야 한다.
본 자료는 환경부에서 지정 및 관리되고 있는 257개 특정 도서의 외래종 제거 등 효과적 관리를 위해 외래식물 분포 현황을 제공하고자 한다.
본 연구의 데이터는 국립환경과학원에서 2006년부터 2013년까지 추진되었던 조사 자료와 국립생태원에서 2014년부터 수행하고 있는 특정도서 정밀조사로부터 구축되었다.
특정도서 정밀조사는 「독도 등 도서지역의 생태계 보전에 관한 특별법」 제4조에 근거하여 특정도서 보전기본계획을 수립하고 특정도서를 10년 기준으로 조사하는 사업이다. 제1차 특정도서 보전기본계획은 2005년에 시작하여 2014년 마무리하였으며, 2차 특정도서 보전기본계획에 의해 2015년부터 10년간 도서조사사업을 진행 중에 있다(Ministry of Environment, 2014b). 국립생태원은 독도를 포함한 257개 특정도서를 대상으로 생태계 변화 및 현황을 파악하고, 생태 훼손(외래종 분포 등) 요인을 분석하는 등 보전지역의 효율적인 관리 방안을 제시하기 위한 목적으로 특정도서 정밀조사를 수행하고 있다(Fig. 1).
본 연구는 2006년부터 2020년까지 시행된 특정도서 정밀 조사의 식물상 조사 결과를 바탕으로 진행하였다. 조사 지역에서 외래식물의 분포를 파악하였으며, 정보를 제공하는 지역은 총 257개 특정도서 중 외래식물 분포가 확인된 127개 특정도서이다(Appendix 1).
데이터는 각 도서의 지형도를 확인한 후 도서 가장자리, 사면, 능선, 정상 등 다양한 생육지가 포함된 조사 경로 내에 출현하는 외래식물의 종명, 위치 정보, 생육환경 등이 기록된 현장조사 자료를 활용하였다. 현장에서 동정이 불가능할 시 채집하여 표본으로 제작 후 재동정하였다. 외래식물 목록은 외래생물 중장기 관리방안(Lee et al. 2011; Ministry of Environment, 2014a; National Institute of Ecology, 2021; Park, 2009)을 참고하였으며, 국가생물종목록을 기준으로 재정리하였다(National Institute of Biological Resources, 2023).
127개 특정도서에서 17과 45속 53종 1변종, 총 54개 분류군의 외래식물이 확인되었다. 생태계교란식물은 국화과의 돼지풀과 삼과의 환삼덩굴 2개 분류군이 확인되었다. 환삼덩굴은 외래식물은 아니지만 특정 지역에서 생태계의 균형을 교란하거나 교란할 우려가 있는 생물로 평가되어 2019년부터 생태계교란 생물로 지정된 종이다(National Institute of Ecology, 2022). 과별로는 국화과(Asteraceae)가 18개 분류군으로 가장 많았고, 벼과(Poaceae) 8개 분류군, 콩과(Fabaceae) 5분류군, 명아주과(Chenopodiaceae) 4분류군, 십자화과(Brassicaceae) 4분류군 순이었으며, 나머지 과에서는 2개 이하 분류군이 확인되었다(Table 1).
종별로는 망초(58개 도서), 좀명아주(26개 도서), 흰명아주(25개 도서), 미국자리공(24개 도서), 아까시나무(23개 도서), 큰방가지똥(21개 도서), 개망초(19개 도서), 방가지똥(17개 도서), 닭의덩굴(16개 도서), 미국가막사리(13개 도서) 등이 가장 많은 도서에서 확인되었다. 생태계교란식물 중 환삼덩굴은 강화도 우도, 수시도 등 27개 도서에서 확인되었고, 돼지풀은 옹진군 항도, 하동군 토도(토끼섬), 소마도, 태안군 묘도(토끼섬), 신안군 불무기도, 여수시 소송도 등 6개 도서에서 확인되었다(Appendix 1, Table 1).
또한 특정도서의 면적별 외래식물의 분포를 살펴보면, 80,000 m2 이상의 면적을 가진 28개의 특정도서에서 평균 4.5±0.54 분류군이 출현하여 가장 높게 나타났으며, 5,000-10,000 m2 면적을 가진 16개 특정도서에서 2.1±0.31 분류군이 출현하여 가장 낮게 조사되었다(Appendix 1, Fig. 2).
본 데이터는 환경부에서 지정하고 관리하고 있는 257개 특정도서에서 2006년부터 2020년까지 수행된 특정도서 정밀 조사의 자료를 이용하여 외래식물 분포 현황이 확인된 127개의 특정도서에 대한 정보를 공개하였다. 도서생태계는 외부와 고립된 생태계로 생태계교란식물 등 외래식물의 침입과 확산으로 자연생태계가 교란되면, 도서 내 희귀하거나 고유한 식물종들은 절멸 또는 멸종 등 부정적인 영향을 받을 수 있다. 따라서 이러한 데이터를 통해 출현이 확인된 생태계교란식물의 제거와 같이 적극적인 관리로 특정도서 자생식물 종다양성 감소 등에 영향을 미치는 외래식물에 대한 특정도서 관리 및 관리 우선순위 선정에 활용할 수 있을 것으로 보인다.
